Beauvais: armed man shot dead by police, officer injured in arm
A man in his thirties armed with a weapon was killed by police officers during his arrest in Beauvais (Oise). A police officer was injured in the arm by the individual, who had left a psychiatric hospital the day before.

A man in his thirties was shot dead on Saturday morning by police officers who were attempting to arrest him at his home in Beauvais, in the Oise, according to ici.fr. During the operation, the individual wounded a police officer in the arm with one or several shots before being neutralised by law enforcement.
According to a statement from the prosecutor of the Republic in Beauvais, Nicolas Septe, the first reports date from between 5am and 7am. Several witnesses then noticed the man in his thirties riding a motorcycle, armed with a pistol, and described as "extremely threatening". He allegedly fired "several shots" before being quickly identified thanks to video surveillance.
Exchange of fire at residence
Around 8am, Beauvais police officers went to the man's flat to apprehend him. Upon arrival, the individual opened fire, hitting an officer in the arm. Prosecutor Septe clarifies in his statement that police officers first attempted to use a stun gun and issued standard warnings before using their service weapons, after being subjected to several shots.
Shot and wounded, the man was taken care of by emergency services but "died shortly after", according to Nicolas Septe. Members of his family, present in the flat at the time of the incident, were not injured. The duty magistrate and prosecutor attended the scene.
Released from psychiatric hospital the day before
According to initial findings of the investigation, the man in his thirties "had been released the day before the incident from the psychiatric hospital centre in Clermont", also located in the Oise, the prosecutor's office states. The motives and motivations for his actions remain unknown at this stage.
Two investigations opened
The prosecutor's office opened two separate procedures. The first concerns "violence and threats with a weapon by the individual against local residents as well as attempted murder of police officers" and has been assigned to Beauvais police station. The second concerns "the use of weapons by police officers" and has been assigned to the Organised and Specialised Crime Division (DCOS) in Creil, jointly with the IGPN services in Lille.
These two investigations must "clarify the context of the facts in greater depth, using the means deployed in forensic and scientific police work", the prosecutor's office states, and also emphasises "the speed and composure of the police officers who intervened to apprehend this aggressive individual".
