A man in his thirties was killed by police officers in Beauvais on Saturday after opening fire on law enforcement who had come to arrest him at his home. A police officer was wounded in the arm. Brut.media reported the details communicated by the local prosecutor's office.
According to Beauvais prosecutor Nicolas Septe, the man had been reported between 5am and 7am by several witnesses whilst travelling on a motorbike "very threateningly" and had "fired several shots with a handgun" in the neighbourhood. He had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital the previous day.
Identified through the city's video surveillance system, the man was located at his home. When police officers attempted to enter his residence, they came under "one or more shots of fire", according to a statement from prosecutor Septe. The officers then resorted to a Taser, issued "standard warnings", before using their service weapons. The man died shortly after being taken into care by emergency services.
Members of his family were present at the scene at the time of the incident; none were injured.
Two investigations were opened. The first, entrusted to Beauvais police station, concerns acts of "violence and threats with a weapon" against local residents as well as an attempted homicide against police officers. The second, relating to the use of weapons by the officers, was entrusted to the judicial police in Creil and the IGPN in Lille.
