An individual in his thirties was killed by police on Saturday 19 September in Beauvais (Oise), after opening fire on officers who came to apprehend him at his home, according to cnews.fr. The town's prosecutor's office confirmed the facts in a statement.
According to Nicolas Septe, prosecutor of Beauvais, the man had been reported by several witnesses early in the morning after having "fired several shots with a handgun". Recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital, he was quickly identified thanks to the city's video surveillance system.
Law enforcement officers went to his home to carry out his apprehension. As they attempted to enter the premises, the individual opened fire on the police officers, wounding one of them in the arm, the prosecutor specified.
Despite regulatory warnings and the use of a Taser, officers were unable to neutralise the man and had to resort to using their service weapons. After being treated by emergency services, the individual died from his injuries.
Two separate investigations were opened. The first, assigned to Beauvais police station, concerns acts of "violence and threats with a weapon" against residents, as well as an attempted murder of police officers. The second, relating to the use of weapons by officials, was assigned to the judicial police of Creil and the IGPN of Lille.
