According to ici.fr, a young woman was tried on Tuesday for the death of Lily, a six-month-old chihuahua puppy found at her home on 1 August in the 1st arrondissement of Marseille. The animal presented with broken ribs, bruises, lesions and burns, as well as signs of malnutrition and dehydration. Lily did not survive and died at the veterinary clinic in Gémenos.
Neighbours had alerted the police after hearing the puppy's cries and those of its owner for several days. The puppy was transported urgently to the veterinary clinic, but its condition proved irreversible.
Before the criminal court in Marseille, the owner denied any act of mistreatment, claiming to have fallen off a scooter while out walking with the animal. However, the account of the suffering inflicted on Lily deeply moved those present, notably the animal protection associations that had joined the case as civil parties, including SPAME.
Véronique Scarica, president of SPAME, declared: "Unfortunately we cannot undo what happened to Lily because she has died, but we must do everything through this trial, in particular so that never again can an animal be made to suffer in this way."
Isabelle Terrin, lawyer for the animal protection associations, argued persuasively on behalf of the memory of the puppy. In her closing remarks, she questioned the accused's motivations: "Why do this to an animal? This little dog lived martyrdom on this earth, I am ashamed for humankind."
At the end of the hearing, Noamie, in tears, was holding against her the urn containing Lily's ashes. She shared her emotion: "When I learned how this little dog had been mistreated I could not sleep for a week, it broke my heart."
The defence denounced the virulent attacks suffered by the owner on social media and reiterated its refusal to acknowledge any act of mistreatment. Judgement was deferred to 27 October.
