Fiat Chrysler summoned to Paris over manipulated diesel engines
Fiat Chrysler, now integrated into the Stellantis group, must appear before the Paris criminal court for aggravated fraud, according to information reported on Monday by fr.news.yahoo.com. The Italian-American manufacturer thus joins Volkswagen and Renault in the French leg of the Dieselgate scandal.
The committal order suspects Fiat Chrysler of marketing, between 2014 and 2017, vehicles from the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Jeep brands equipped with Multijet II diesel engines. These engines are alleged to have shown "frequent and substantial exceeding of the regulatory threshold for nitrogen oxide emissions", air pollutants associated with respiratory diseases.
According to the prosecution, certain vehicles would have been "specially calibrated" to comply with emissions thresholds during certification tests. Under real driving conditions, their pollution control system would, by contrast, have functioned in a "severely degraded" manner, making their use potentially "dangerous to the health of humans or animals".
A first hearing for fixing, a procedural step intended to establish the definitive timetable, is scheduled for 16 November 2027. The trial itself could take place between 2 and 30 November 2028, according to dates "envisaged" that remain to be confirmed.
