Fiat Chrysler, now integrated into the Stellantis group, has been referred to criminal court in France for aggravated fraud, according to rfi.fr. The manufacturer is accused of having concealed the actual level of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from its diesel vehicles during homologation tests.
This is the third major automotive manufacturer to face justice in France in the context of the dieselgate scandal. Volkswagen, the German manufacturer, and Renault, the French group, had been referred to trial before it for similar offences.
Dieselgate refers to the widespread manipulation of emissions control software, revealed from 2015 onwards. The manufacturers concerned are said to have programmed their vehicles to display emission levels that complied with regulations only during official tests, whilst actual exhaust on the road far exceeded the permitted thresholds.
The French legal proceedings aim to establish the criminal liability of the companies involved for aggravated fraud against consumers and regulatory authorities. No hearing date has been specified in the information broadcast by rfi.fr.
