Conviction for driving under the influence of drugs

A man in his forties from Flers (Orne) was convicted on Monday, 12 October 2026 by the court in Argentan, according to actu.fr. Gendarmes stopped him in April at Athis-Val-de-Rouvre whilst he was driving a Renault Laguna. The vehicle had no insurance and the driver tested positive for drugs — a biological analysis confirmed the presence of cannabis.

The 45-year-old man did not contest the facts before the magistrate. His criminal history shows 16 previous convictions for handling stolen goods, refusal to comply with police instructions, violence committed in a group, breach of respect towards authority, assault and driving offences. The public prosecutor had requested 70 hours of community service (TIG) to be completed within 18 months, or a fine of 500 euros in the event of non-compliance, as well as a road safety awareness course.

The court imposed the sentence of 70 hours of community service to be carried out within 18 months, with the alternative of three months' imprisonment in the event of failure to comply. The man must also bear the costs of organising the hearing. The judgment may be appealed within a period of ten days, with the right of appeal open to both the defence and the prosecutor's office.
