Shock and bewilderment after shooting in Yvelines

A shooting that occurred on Friday 23 October killed one person and injured several others in the municipalities of Trappes and La Verrière in Yvelines. According to TF1 Info, residents of both towns remain in shock over this act of violence.

In the Trappes district, residents are struggling to come to terms with the morning's events. One of them emphasises that the profile of the victims — people from racialised backgrounds — is causing particular concern. "The profile of the victims are people from racialised backgrounds. And I myself am of North African origin. And from the moment we know there could be motivations around that, it frightens all of us who have that same profile in the town," he says. Another resident, Cissé, is worried for her children who regularly use the path where the shooting took place. "We're worried, we're asking ourselves questions. I have my grandchildren here who come to play in the playground. So it's frightening."

Amine, whose identity is being protected for his safety, was in close proximity to the shots. He had come to fill up with petrol and found himself just a few metres from the gunman. "I remained paralysed. I thought he was going to come to my window. I told myself, I'm next," he says. In La Verrière, the suspect seriously injured three people, including a 12-year-old girl.

Two teenagers testify to their distress. One fears the gunman may have headed towards the school where his mother works, while the other highlights the scale of the violence: "It's extreme violence. Especially since he took a route that everyone has already used."

Psychological support units have been opened at the town halls of Trappes and La Verrière to support residents and shopkeepers traumatised by these events.
