An arrest in a car park in Plourin-lès-Morlaix
In late December 2025, gendarmes stopped a vehicle parked with its engine and lights running in a car park in Plourin-lès-Morlaix. Inside were a man and a woman, both middle-aged. The officers discovered several sachets containing a brownish powder identified as heroin.
At the hearing, the man, a native of Brest, admitted to all offences committed between March and December 2025: hard drug deliveries across Finistère — Douarnenez, Quimper, Rosporden, Plounéour-Ménez, Plougouvelin, among other localities. He had obtained this work through a Telegram channel.
Addiction rooted for years
The defendant explained that he had "fled Brest" twenty-four years ago in an attempt to escape heroin, before relapsing two years earlier following a serious health problem. "It took me five months to learn to walk again, I was not getting by financially, I made the terrible mistake of accepting this job," he stated in court, snapping his fingers to illustrate how quickly he had relapsed. He took his own consumption from the goods entrusted to him by the network.
The co-defendant, described as "a long-standing acquaintance," claimed she had accompanied the man only once or twice, without financial benefit. "I just asked to smoke a few puffs of heroin," she told the tribunal. Having been a heroin consumer for twenty years, she is undergoing methadone treatment in an attempt to get clean.
A debt of 50,000 euros revealing the scale of the trafficking
The tribunal nevertheless recalled that the defendant had continued his deliveries in the first half of 2026 — offences already tried in May — even though a court summons had been served on him. The judges also highlighted that the 50,000 euro debt that he himself acknowledges he now owes testifies to the extent of his involvement in this network, going beyond a simple activity intended to finance his addiction.
The defence lawyer argued the human dimension of the case. "I understand that this case may frustrate justice professionals. What I take from it is sadness: sadness at what we are capable of doing for drugs and for this addiction that is rooted in the body," she stated. She also highlighted her client's weight gain of 21 kilograms and renewed professional motivation over the past four months.
Suspended sentences to give a chance at rehabilitation
The tribunal ultimately sentenced the man to eighteen months in prison with simple suspension, and the woman to twelve months also with suspension. The judges justified these sentences by stressing their desire to give the two defendants the opportunity to "do what is necessary to overcome this addiction."
