Pizza Fan: Algorithm "concealed" orders — VAT fraud possibly reaches back to 2016

The Pizza Fan chain's tax evasion case against the Greek state, totalling €25 million, may extend chronologically back to 2016, according to statements by the Greek Police spokesperson, Konstantia Dimoglidu, as reported by cnn.gr.

Dimoglidu, speaking to Mega, clarified that the Organised Crime Suppression Directorate received the complaint approximately six months earlier and that "the activity began at least from 2022". However, investigations conducted the previous day at the chain's stores showed that the timeframe "may go even further back, from 2016, something that requires further investigation".

The algorithm and method

According to the police spokesperson, the company used a special algorithm that bypassed the order system — particularly for orders paid in cash. These orders were recorded in the system as "gifts", with the result that no receipts were issued and no VAT was remitted to the state.

Arrests and seizures

During on-site investigations at stores in Attica and Thessaloniki, authorities found in a space behind a wardrobe containing shoes and clothing, in the residence of one of the key members of the organisation, "a very large sum in cash" as well as jewellery, "carefully hidden", Dimoglidu reported.

The arrests exceeded 20 in total. The nine key members of the organisation have been arrested and are expected to be brought before the prosecutor.
