Gunshots cost one man his life in central Athens, just a few metres away from a primary school where parents and students were celebrating the end of the school year.

On Saturday evening, on the steps of Kallidromio on Strefi Hill, an unknown assailant opened fire and killed a man. The incident occurred at a distance of just twenty metres from the 36th primary school, where a celebration marking the end of the school year was taking place at that time, with a crowd of parents and children in the school courtyard.
Eyewitnesses, including community councillor Chrysoula Papageorgiou and parent Margarita Kiaou, described scenes of panic. Children playing in the courtyard heard the shots and thought they were flash-bang sounds. When they asked the riot police officers stationed permanently next to the school, they were told the incident was not their concern. Subsequently, young students ran in fear searching for their parents.
The Strefi area has been under strict police surveillance since the end of April 2025. Riot police units, DELTA motorcycles and OPKE vehicles patrol the hill around the clock. Nevertheless, violent crime continues to afflict the neighbourhood. Drug trafficking and cold-blooded executions take place at distances of merely tens of metres from the local police station.
The Parents' Association of the 36th Primary School has filed a report with the Ombudsman, arguing that the persistent presence of police forces does not prevent crime, but rather hampers the daily lives of families. Parents report repeated use of chemicals, teargas and flash-bang grenades in the presence of minors, as well as incidents of body searches of teenagers.
The fact that the murder took place next to a school full of children, whilst strong police forces were stationed just metres away, raises serious questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the area.
