The Mixed Jury Court of Appeals convicted the main defendant to life imprisonment for the death of an 11-year-old schoolboy, Marios Souloukos, who died in June 2017 in Menidi during a school event. The announcement of the verdict caused significant disturbances at the courthouse of the former Evelpides military academy school.
According to Dnews, individuals from the convicted man's circle attacked television crews at the courthouse entrance, throwing cameras to the ground. Police intervention was necessary to restore order.
During the disturbances, the distinctive phrase "we did well to kill him" was heard. At the same time, the victim's relatives burst into applause following the announcement of the sentence.
The prosecutor handling the case emphasised that the criminal act constitutes a serious violation against the minor and society. "It is unthinkable that children should lose their lives at a school celebration in times of peace," he said, calling for the applause to stop and noting that this decision represents evidence of the failure of the entire social fabric.
The court recognised no mitigating circumstances for the defendant. He maintained his claim that he had no involvement in the incident, and at the announcement of the sentence he was visibly emotional.
