Nearly nine years after the tragic death of a child from a stray bullet at a school celebration in Menidi, the competent court unanimously found the first defendant guilty and imposed the maximum penalty.
The Mixed Jury Court of Athens sentenced the man accused of the death of 11-year-old Mario Soulouko to life imprisonment. The child was shot dead in June 2017. The regular judges and jurors recognised no mitigating circumstances in the convicted man.
The presiding prosecutor had proposed the maximum penalty, characterising the act as one of particular great moral turpitude towards the victim and society as a whole. His proposal was accepted by the court.
Upon announcement of the verdict, the mother of the unjustly deceased child burst into tears, calling out her son's name. For his part, the convicted man shouted that he was innocent. "I didn't do it, we've eaten a life sentence for nothing," he was reported to have said. His wife pleaded for his innocence.
The case had shocked public opinion and had highlighted security issues in areas where shootings at public events were a frequent phenomenon.
