A business in the Northern Sector of Athens was inspected following a foodborne illness incident at a restaurant in Penteli. The authorities seized thousands of kilograms of meat and recommended suspension of operations.

A foodborne illness incident at a restaurant in Penteli prompted the Attica Regional authorities to launch an investigation that uncovered extensive violations at a meat company in the Northern Sector of the capital. The facility had supplied the restaurant with the disputed products.
Inspection teams found significant shortcomings in food safety, traceability, refrigeration and storage conditions, as well as in the implementation of required monitoring procedures.
More than 5.3 tonnes of meat products were removed from the facility after being deemed unsafe for consumption. The committee handling the case decided that the seizure would be retained and that the prescribed penalties would be imposed.
The inspections were not limited to the company's headquarters. Teams from the Piraeus Veterinary Department carried out additional seizures of approximately 300 kilograms at other points in the supply chain.
The findings showed that the company was serving customers on islands as well as accommodation units. Furthermore, in coordination with local authorities, another 500 kilograms of related products were seized in Chios for examination.
The Regional Directorate for Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Affairs recommended to EFET that the business cease operations temporarily.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardaliás has ordered intensification of inspections at all stages of the food supply chain with the aim of protecting public health.
