Arrest in Veroia for telephone fraud of 30,000 euros with surgery pretext
A man was arrested in Veroia after attempting to obtain 30,000 euros through telephone fraud. An accomplice posed as a doctor for an allegedly urgent operation on the victim's daughter.
Arrest of "collector" in Veroia for 30,000 euro fraud
A man was arrested in Veroia on Thursday 5 June following immediate mobilisation by the city's Crime Investigation and Prosecution Department, according to police.
On the morning of the same day, an accomplice telephoned a woman posing as a doctor. He claimed that her daughter had been involved in a serious traffic accident and demanded 30,000 euros for an allegedly urgent surgical operation.
To strengthen the credibility of the fraud, a second female accomplice posed as the victim's daughter in a telephone call, attempting to persuade the mother to hand over the money. Police officers located and arrested on the spot the man who was to receive the sum.
As reported by Ta Nea, the investigation is continuing to locate the remaining accomplices and to establish any involvement they may have in similar cases. The arrested man will be brought before the Magistrate's Court Prosecutor in Veroia.
Following the incident, the General Regional Police Directorate of Central Macedonia issued an announcement with advice to citizens. Police advise citizens not to trust strangers who telephone claiming to be various officials and not to reveal whether they keep money, jewellery or valuable items at home.
At the same time, it calls on citizens to inform police immediately even in cases of attempted fraud, whilst emphasising the need to spread this advice amongst relatives, friends and particularly the elderly.
