Arrest in Thessaloniki for telephone fraud of €40,000 in Serres
According to ertnews.gr, an elderly woman in Serres was deceived and persuaded to throw €40,000 from her house balcony, which was subsequently collected by the perpetrators.
Police officers from Serres Security Subdivision investigated the case and located the main suspect in a Thessaloniki hotel. The arrested man, a 56-year-old Romanian national, is believed to have played an active role in the operation.
According to the authorities, the 56-year-old admitted his involvement in both the Serres case and another recent fraud that occurred in Larissa.
The investigation continues with the aim of identifying possible accomplices and locating the stolen money. The authorities are also examining the possible connection of the case to a wider telephone fraud network operating in various areas of the country.
The 56-year-old is expected to appear before the Public Prosecutor of the First Instance Court of Serres on Wednesday, 6 May, to face charges. The authorities are calling on citizens — particularly elderly people — not to trust strangers who request money by citing urgent circumstances.
