An inspection of a ship from Piraeus led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man carrying cannabis and cigarette packages without the required tax stamp.

Officers from the Port Authority of Chios, in cooperation with police from the Regional Narcotics Prosecution Unit, arrested a 30-year-old foreign national on Friday morning.

The ship had departed from Piraeus and docked at the island. Upon arrival, authorities conducted an inspection of passengers' luggage. A dog trained in substance detection showed particular interest in the 30-year-old's suitcase.

Port Authority officials investigated the item and found a plastic package containing raw cannabis weighing 15.92 grammes. At the same time, 19 cigarette packages were found, which did not bear the required special consumption tax stamp. Each package contained 20 units.

The man was arrested for violation of legislation regarding addictive substances, as well as for breach of the National Customs Code. The seized items were handed over to the Port Authority of Chios, which is conducting the preliminary investigation. The lost public revenue from tobacco products is calculated at €83.26.
