A 31-year-old man and his mother were arrested in Chania following a report of a savage assault on a 39-year-old woman inside a hotel in the presence of her two minor children.

A serious incident of violent behaviour against a woman occurred on the evening of Saturday 13 June at an accommodation facility in the Kamisiana area in Chania. A 31-year-old man and his 54-year-old mother are alleged to have attacked the former's partner, aged 39.
According to cretalive.gr, the accommodation facility's staff were alerted by loud noises, screams and voices coming from the room where the family was staying. The employees decided to intervene and entered the space, where they witnessed a scene that shocked them. The 39-year-old had sustained serious injuries to her face and body, whilst the room contained her partner, his mother and two children in a state of panic.
According to the testimony given by the victim to police, the tension began with a verbal altercation between her and the older woman. The situation escalated rapidly, with the 54-year-old exerting violent pressure on the victim, pulling her by the hair and striking her. Her partner then allegedly continued the assault, causing her additional injuries to her face with punches.
The incident took place in the presence of two minor children. One is 9 years old and comes from the woman's previous relationship, whilst the second is only 3 years old and is the couple's common child.
The Chania police authorities proceeded to arrest the 31-year-old on the spot. Although the victim stated that she did not wish for criminal prosecution of the perpetrators, domestic violence legislation mandates ex officio prosecution in such cases. For this reason, an urgent forensic medical examination was ordered to document the injuries so that the case could proceed to justice.
