Armed robbery in Csaroda: perpetrators also deployed pepper spray
Two armed men robbed two Ukrainian women on Thursday morning in Csaroda, in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, according to Index. The attack took place in a lay-by next to the 41 main road: the men smashed the car window, then threatened the victims with weapons and took approximately 30,000 euros – nearly 10 million forints – from them.
According to RTL information, the perpetrators struck from behind the local cultural centre. Local residents believe the robbery was premeditated.
Witness accounts differ on exactly how the pepper spray came into play. Some say the attackers sprayed one of the victims, while others say one of the women tried to defend herself with it. A significant amount of pepper spray got into the victim's eyes, and she had to be treated at a nearby medical surgery. According to the general practitioner, the woman tried to describe what happened in broken Hungarian, but fortunately she suffered no permanent injury. The other victim went into shock.
After the robbery, police cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt. According to local residents, the two men fled the scene on foot. There is disagreement over whether they wore masks or simply pulled hoods over their heads. One witness reported that one of the perpetrators attempted to enter the local municipal office building, but the door was locked. When the man pulled at the door, his hood slipped off – this allowed the witness to tell investigators that the person being sought has a beard.
Csaroda lies only a few kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Local residents believe it is possible that the perpetrators have since left the country. In response to RTL's enquiry, police stated that, given the ongoing investigation, they are unable to provide further information on the matter at this time.
