In Kecskemét, a six-person unit works exclusively on eliminating drug trafficking, although according to a report from hiros.hu, the National Police Headquarters has not yet granted official recognition to the team.
Lieutenant Colonel Gábor Gama Kovács, head of the local police headquarters, said in a report to the city leadership that the drug problem cannot be solved purely through law enforcement tools. The focus must be on prevention, because if there is no demand, there is no one to sell to – added the captain, who in his thirty-five-year career has seen very few people recover from substance addiction.
On 8 November 2024, the police service requested the establishment of an independent Delta unit from the ORFK, but the request was then rejected. Nevertheless, the headquarters assembled a six-member team whose members deal exclusively with drug matters. The captain emphasised that in some cases, drug quantities of several kilograms have already surfaced in criminal circles.
He also touched on the staffing shortage: the headquarters does not have full staffing, but the re-enlistment of discharged personnel has already begun. On Tuesday, two former colleagues reported again, and the personnel is expected to be fully staffed by the end of summer.
With the city's financial support, they were able to pay for approximately 6,000 hours of overtime last year. The captain also highlighted cooperation with the citizen patrol and city law enforcement.
He also warned about the spread of online fraud: criminals mainly deceive elderly people and trick them out of their money. Never trust unknown persons who promise customers huge profits – he emphasised.
