Hungarian police have arrested a 30-year-old Budapest man for the unlawful use of human remains, after human remains were found in multiple properties he owned. The man admitted to cooking and consuming food made from human remains.
During house searches, officers seized skulls, bones, an embalmed human face, a severed hand, a brain and an organ stored in a preserving jar. The investigation was launched by the Murder Division of the National Investigation Office (KR NNI) after receiving a report that a cleaner at a Budapest hospital was storing human body parts at his workplace and at home.
Investigators discovered that the suspect had a keen interest in anatomy and pathology, regularly dissected animals, and is suspected of acquiring human remains. Police believe he may have obtained the body parts partly through professional connections, whilst also searching for remains in Slovakia and abandoned cemeteries in Hungary.
Family members and friends allegedly knew about the man's gruesome hobby, which he documented with photographs. Investigators arrested the man in Budapest's 2nd district on 17 June. During house searches, computers, mobile phones and data storage devices were seized, but the most disturbing evidence was the discovery of the human remains.
The origin of the heart stored in the preserving jar is still under investigation, and it remains unclear whether it is human or animal. During questioning, the man admitted to the offence and stated that he feels a particular attraction to human body parts. The suspect was arrested and placed under court supervision.
