Garlasco case: Sempio rejects fingerprint, submits expert reports at last minute

Andrea Sempio defends himself: "The fingerprints are not mine"

According to rainews.it, Andrea Sempio, 38, under investigation for the murder of Chiara Poggi in Garlasco, has released statements to the media in recent hours as his defence team prepares to file memorandums and expert reports. Sempio categorically rejects the evidence of fingerprint 33 found on the wall of the stairwell leading to the basement where the woman's body was discovered.

"Fingerprint 33 cannot be attributed to me," Sempio stated. He explained that the point on the wall where it was found was touched by multiple people while descending the stairs, and that his shoe size has consistently been 44 since he was 17 or 18 years old. The defence also contends that the fingerprint found in other parts of the house corresponds to a size 39/40, and does not believe it to be a bloody fingerprint.

Technical expert reports and the role of the footwear specialist

Sempio's lawyers conducted examinations never carried out before, involving a footwear technician specialising in the shoe model attributed to the perpetrator of the crime. The defence also consulted an expert from a different field, having both work "blind" without mutual contact: according to reports, they reached the same conclusions. This approach represents an attempt to strengthen the defence position during the preliminary phase.

Fear of arrest and investigation into corruption

Sempio expressed persistent fear of a possible arrest. He also revealed that he was unaware whether he was involved in a parallel investigation concerning corruption, with regard to which rumours had circulated about his involvement, but of which he has no official confirmation. He stated: "The idea of being arrested in some way has always been there from day one."

Imminent deadline and preliminary hearing

The investigation deadlines expire on 18 October, less than 48 hours from when the statements were released. Sempio expects a request for committal to trial and has expressed the desire to rapidly move through the preliminary hearing phase, confident that the details presented by the defence can clarify his position. He stated he hoped to be able to present all the defence material in court, bringing the same level of detail analysed during the investigation.
