Attempted murder: charges escalate for the attackers
According to Il Fatto Quotidiano, charges against the two minors involved in a series of attacks that occurred in Rome have undergone significant escalation. From what was initially framed as a prank, the investigation has moved to attempted murder, aggravated personal injury and assault in concert. The two boys, aged 16 and 17, have confessed. They will be questioned by the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office on 20 October.
The greater severity emerges from the attack on 5 October in Monteverde. Davide Iacopini, a 42-year-old actor, was struck with a kick whilst travelling on an electric scooter on via Anton Giulio Barrilli. The impact caused him to fall against a parked car; he lost consciousness. Admitted to San Camillo hospital in intensive care, he was operated on twice on his head. The prognosis remains guarded, although an improvement in his condition has been recorded.
This episode represents the culmination of violent escalation concentrated over 48 hours, during which five other attacks occurred against passers-by, with less severe outcomes. At the time of identification, the two boys attributed their actions to boredom and a desire to have fun. "We had fun that way", they reportedly told investigators, adding that they stopped after learning of Iacopini's critical condition.
The investigation must now clarify whether behind the episodes there was merely the initiative of the two or whether the attacks were linked to a challenge shared with others, possibly online. The carabinieri have seized the mobile phones of the minors, their parents and a dashcam from the minicar, to be examined at the request of the Prosecutor's Office.
The sixteen-year-old brother of the driver, who was travelling on the passenger side and allegedly physically struck the victims, told newspapers that the two friends together become "explosive". According to his account, months earlier the families had already decided to limit their contact. Among schoolmates, disbelief prevails.
The interrogations and investigations into the seized devices will determine the complete reconstruction of the facts and individual responsibilities. The new charge of attempted murder will impact the evaluation of precautionary measures. The investigation now enters its decisive phase.
