Murder of couple in Mirandola, son accuses suspect
Stefano Casari, son of Pietro Ferdinando Casari and Vincenza Giannini, described on Thursday the mental condition of Daniele Tavoni, the main suspect in the double murder that occurred in the countryside of Mirandola, province of Modena. According to virgilio.it, Casari stated that Tavoni, the son of victim Giannini from a previous marriage, had acute mental health problems.
"Daniele is difficult to explain. Over the last two years he was no longer in his right mind," Casari said. He then added: "If he needed treatment, this boy should have been treated. If it was him, it is the fault of society, because people like him need to be helped."
The couple, aged 82 and 74, were found dead on Wednesday 15 October in their home in the countryside of the municipality of approximately 25,000 inhabitants. They had deep wounds to the neck and throat. Inside the house, several knives and cutting weapons were found, along with numerous bloodstains.
Tavoni, 55 years old, was arrested on Friday 16 October, the day after the bodies were discovered, and transferred to the prison in Modena. According to what emerged, Tavoni had previously been admitted to hospital for a psychiatric issue. The police initially created uncertainty as to whether he was actually in the house at the time of discovery, as immediate arrest had been deferred by twenty-four hours.
