Court of Cassation sets 19 November hearing for former Bologna doctor sentenced to life imprisonment
The first criminal section of the Court of Cassation will meet on 19 November to examine the appeal of Giampaolo Amato, 66, a former doctor at Virtus and Bologna ophthalmologist, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife Isabella Linsalata and his mother-in-law Giulia Tateo. This is reported by ANSA Cronaca.
According to the prosecution, the two murders were committed using a mix of drugs — Sevoflurane and Midazolam. The first victim was Tateo, 87, found dead on 9 October 2021. On the night between 30 and 31 October, his wife, a 62-year-old gynaecologist, died.
The Court of Appeal assize defined Amato's conduct as repeated murder "dictated exclusively by selfish motivations, which define a personality trait lacking any humanly or ethically comprehensible aspects". The motive identified by the judges is twofold: the desire to freely maintain a relationship with another woman and economic interest related to his wife's property assets.
Amato has been in prison since April 2023, following his arrest by the carabinieri, and has always declared his innocence. The first suspicions were raised by Anna Maria Linsalata, Isabella's sister, now a civil party in the proceeding and assisted by lawyer Maurizio Merlini.
