Fifth arrest in death of Nicola Musiani: 17-year-old of Modenese origin detained

According to Google News IT — Crime (it), on the morning of Thursday 3 September, carabinieri from the Investigative Unit of Ravenna arrested a 17-year-old minor of Modenese origin at his residence in Forlì where he lives with his family. The young man is accused of acting in concert with four other youths in the fatal beating of Nicola Musiani, 53 years old, which occurred during the night of 18 to 19 July in the square at viale Tritone in Pinarella di Cervia.

The measure was carried out pursuant to a preventive custody order issued by the investigating judge on request of the Prosecutor's Office for Minors in Bologna. The 17-year-old was taken to the juvenile penal institution in Bologna.

The five suspects and the charges

Approximately one month earlier, carabinieri from the Cervia-Milano Marittima Company and the Investigative Unit of Ravenna had already detained four youths aged between 19 and 23, residents in the province of Forlì-Cesena and predominantly of foreign origin, at the delegation of prosecutor Angela Scorza. All four are currently in prison.

The minor is charged, in addition to acting in concert in the murder, with damaging the camper van of a 50-year-old seasonal worker from Cesena who was together with Musiani that night, and attempted injury to the same man: according to investigators, the youths allegedly attempted to make him leave the vehicle in order to attack him as well.

The night of 19 July and Pollini's testimony

Musiani lived inside his camper van in the square at viale Tritone. Three days after the beating, he died at Cesena hospital.

A witness to the assault was Gionata Pollini, 50 years old, a waiter who lives in a camper van in the same square. That night he heard noises outside and the youths knocked on his door. One of them allegedly threatened him: "Either you come out or we come in". Pollini did not leave: "If they come in they'll kill me", he thought. He risked meeting the same fate as Musiani.

Citizens' demonstrations

In the months following the murder, citizens organised several public initiatives to remember Nicola Musiani and call for greater security. The latest took place on 19 August: approximately one hundred people walked in silence through the town centre with placards and posters, concluding with a long spontaneous round of applause in memory of 'Nick'.
