Couple found dead under A1 viaduct: femicide hypothesis followed by suicide

According to reports from Google News IT — Crime (it), on the afternoon of Thursday 3 September, the bodies of Lorena Isceri and Federico Vella, 36 years old, were found lifeless at the foot of a viaduct along the A1 motorway, in the territory of Barberino di Mugello, in the province of Florence. Investigators are hypothesising a murder — with possible classification as femicide — followed by the man's suicide.

The emergency call and phone tracking

One of the most dramatic elements of the incident concerns the woman's attempt to seek help. At around 14:00, Lorena Isceri is believed to have made two telephone calls: one to emergency services and another to someone she knew. In at least one of the calls, she is reported to have spoken only a few words: "Help, help". Shortly after, the phone stopped responding to investigators' attempts to contact it.

The operations centre of the Police Headquarters therefore initiated localisation of the device. The signal enabled officers to track the mobile phone's movements and establish that it was located along the motorway, in the Barberino di Mugello area. When the Motorway Police arrived at the scene, the two were already outside the vehicle and emergency responders were unable to save them.

The dynamics reconstructed by investigators

The investigative reconstruction also includes a phase preceding the final moments on the A1. According to reports from Ansa and Corriere Fiorentino, Vella is believed to have waited for his former partner to return home. In the garage, he allegedly attacked her, immobilised her and tied her up, before placing her in the car boot.

The woman is believed to have managed to retrieve the man's mobile phone, which was inside the vehicle, and used it to contact emergency services. It was precisely this call for help that triggered the police response and the subsequent phone tracking.

At the scene of the tragedy, the Motorway Police, firefighters, 118 emergency personnel and investigators from the Florence Mobile Squad intervened, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office. The vehicle used by the couple was found a short distance from the bodies.

The relationship and social media signals

Federico Vella and Lorena Isceri had been in a romantic relationship and, according to available information, had separated during the summer. The man's social media profiles contain numerous images of the couple, including trips, dinners and moments spent together.

On 12 August, Vella had posted a message with several photographs related to the relationship, accompanied by words referring to the separation and the loss of his partner. More recently, he had posted an Instagram story with the text "Goodbye to all".

The incident remains the subject of inquiries by the Florence Public Prosecutor's Office. The elements gathered so far outline the hypothesis of a murder followed by suicide, but investigations are ongoing.

Two other cases on the same day

On the same day, two other episodes believed to be murder-suicide cases were recorded. In Finale Ligure, in the Savona area, a father, mother and 14-year-old son were found dead in the home on via dei Forti di Legnino. According to investigators, Daniele Baruzzo, 60 years old, shot his wife Paola Siri and son Mattia before taking his own life. A note believed to be written by the man was found in the house, whilst investigators are reconstructing the motivations and circumstances.

In Ostia, a man was found dead in the street after falling from a fourth-floor flat on via Mare di Tasman. An elderly woman was also found dead in the flat, having allegedly been suffocated with a pillow. The two victims are believed to have been mother and son.
