Family tragedy in Finale Ligure: Baruzzo's notes and the legal firearm
Daniele Baruzzo killed his wife Paola Siri and son Mattia before taking his own life. In notes found at the house, he asked not to become a media case.
Baruzzo's notes: "I do not want my case to become a media event"
"I do not want my case to become a media event." This is one of the phrases contained in the notes found in the home in Finale Ligure where, during the night of 3 and 4 September, Daniele Baruzzo allegedly killed his wife Paola Siri and adolescent son Mattia, before taking his own life. This is reported by Il Fatto Quotidiano - Cronaca, which has reconstructed the main details that emerged in the opening hours of the investigation.
Those writings are now at the centre of the investigators' work. They do not constitute an explanation of the facts, but they convey the experiences and interpretation that the man gave to his own family situation. The notes suggest a sense of distress, without however any reference to economic difficulties. The will expressed was clear: to keep the matter away from public attention.
The reconstruction of the night
According to the first investigative findings, everything would have happened around midnight. Some elderly neighbours reportedly mentioned only later that they had heard noises coming from the flat, without initially connecting them to gunshots. Only after learning of the death of the three family members would they have reconsidered those sounds.
The sequence reconstructed by investigators indicates that Baruzzo would have shot his son first, who was sleeping, and then reached his wife, found dead in bed. After writing the notes, he would have turned the weapon on himself.
The alarm raised at noon
It was not the nocturnal noises that uncovered the tragedy, but Baruzzo's absence from his workplace. Colleagues described him as an extremely precise and punctual person. When he failed to appear, his employer became alarmed and around noon an alarm was raised that led to checks at the home and the discovery of the three bodies.
The firearm used was legally held. Baruzzo was in possession of a firearms permit for sporting use and owned legal weapons. Alongside the reconstruction of the scene, examinations of the notes were initiated.
Investigation entrusted to the carabinieri
The Prosecutor's Office of Savona has ordered autopsies on the three bodies. The examinations will need to clarify with precision the causes and times of deaths. The investigation has been entrusted to the carabinieri.
