Three Romanian fugitive brothers arrested in Italy for skimming and money laundering

State Police arrested three Romanian citizen brothers between 22 July and 21 August 2026 in the provinces of Savona and Brescia. This is reported by Google News IT — Crime (it), citing details released by the Savona Police Headquarters. The three men, aged 48, 49, and 51, were subjects of European Arrest Warrants issued by the Romanian judicial authorities: they had been definitively sentenced to terms of between five and seven years' imprisonment for serious crimes of economic crime, computer crime, money laundering, and reinvestment of illicit proceeds.
According to investigative findings, the brothers held senior positions in a criminal organisation operating between the United States, Austria, Italy, and Romania. The group recruited individuals to send to the United States to install skimming devices—illegal electronic devices used to copy credit and debit card data—on automatic teller machines. The data obtained in this way was used to carry out fraudulent withdrawals; the money was then transferred to Europe, concealed through an extensive network, and reinvested mainly in the real estate sector, as well as in cars, travel, and other luxury goods.
Operations in the national territory were coordinated by the SCO—Central Operational Service of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate of State Police—with the involvement of the Mobile Squads of Genoa, Savona, and Brescia.
The first arrest took place on 22 July at Millesimo, in the province of Savona. Investigators from the Mobile Squads of Genoa and Savona, following prolonged surveillance activities, identified the residence in which one of the three brothers was hiding. The man was found inside a specially constructed cavity to evade controls; he was carrying false documents and several mobile telephones.
The search for the other two continued without interruption. Information provided by Romanian investigators, combined with enquiries conducted in Italy, made it possible to reconstruct the network protecting the fugitives and to progressively narrow the search perimeter to the province of Brescia.
Traditional judicial police techniques proved decisive: stakeouts, surveillance operations, and observation services transformed investigative information into concrete findings in the field. On 21 August, after weeks of uninterrupted searches, officers from the Mobile Squad of Brescia identified in Roè Volciano the building in which the two brothers had taken refuge. After observing one of them leave to make purchases and waiting for his return, investigators intervened and arrested both.
The capture of the three represents, according to the authorities, the result of genuine and continuous international cooperation, based on the ability to quickly share operational information across national borders, under the coordination of the SCO in Rome.
