Caritas affair: eleven people charged in €61 million embezzlement
The embezzlement scandal that struck Caritas Luxembourg is the subject of an in-depth investigation. Eleven suspects have been formally charged, whilst two others have been captured outside the Grand Duchy.

Two years after the scandal broke, Luxembourg's judicial authorities continue to dismantle the network responsible for the €61 million loss suffered by the Caritas association. To date, the number of people formally charged stands at eleven.
Questioned by LSAP deputies Taina Bofferding and Mars Di Bartolomeo, Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue provided an update on the investigations. According to figures from the prosecutor's office, eighty-one mutual legal assistance requests have been sent to fourteen EU countries and three nations outside the Union. Thirteen international arrest warrants have been issued, and two judgements by consent have been delivered. Police officers from the investigation unit have produced ninety-three reports.
Regarding the amount recovered, the ministers explained that no detailed figures can be communicated at present. Sums are blocked abroad by foreign courts. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine whether these assets can be recovered.
Furthermore, two accomplices have been arrested outside the Grand Duchy's borders. An Italian citizen, suspected of having played a key role, was apprehended in the Italian capital. These two individuals have not yet been transferred to Luxembourg nor charged there.
