Colombian arrest of suspect linked to record cocaine seizure in Luxembourg
Hermes Julián García Pérez, 46, was apprehended in Rionegro, near Medellín, following a Luxembourg arrest warrant. His extradition to the Grand Duchy could constitute a first.
Suspect apprehended in Rionegro, extradition to Luxembourg under consideration
Le Quotidien reports that Hermes Julián García Pérez, nicknamed "Hermes", was arrested on Tuesday by Colombian national police in Rionegro, near Medellín. The 46-year-old man was walking his dog at the time of his apprehension. His arrest follows the issuance of a Luxembourg arrest warrant for drug trafficking.
The Colombian media outlet El Colombiano, cited by Le Quotidien, indicates that the suspect had links to the alleged "Balkans cartel". He also allegedly used a clothing manufacturing company in Medellín to launder money. According to the same sources, García Pérez was allegedly involved in the shipment of approximately two tonnes of cocaine per month to Europe, destined for the port of Antwerp, Belgium.
According to the Luxemburger Wort, the man was linked to the record cocaine seizure carried out in northern Luxembourg in 2025. Hundreds of kilogrammes of pure cocaine had been discovered concealed in a stone crusher in a locality in the north of the country. At €30,000 per kilogramme of pure, uncut cocaine, this seizure represented several million euros worth of merchandise — a first in the history of the Grand Duchy.
García Pérez is now subject to extradition to Luxembourg. El Colombiano clarifies that it would constitute, if it comes to fruition, the first extradition of a Colombian national to the Grand Duchy.
