Luxembourg's courts have delivered a judgment in a case where a relative of a deceased person was sentenced for abandoning a body in a forest and defrauding social benefits, according to Luxembourg Times.
The judges imposed a sentence of 32 months imprisonment, of which 20 were suspended, along with a fine of €2,500. The convicted person must also repay in full two years of pension payments received unlawfully.
The facts date back to a period when the accused allegedly concealed the death of a family member in order to continue receiving allowances. The body had allegedly been abandoned in a wooded area.
This case highlights fraud in social benefits and the difficulties faced by the courts in detecting this type of fraud.
