On Wednesday, 8 July, officers from the Grand Ducal Police and customs conducted a joint operation at Mertert port. This action aimed to curb the illicit trade in narcotics and the activities of structured criminal groups. Security services communicated information about this intervention the following Friday.
During this operation, officials selectively inspected a river barge, various containers, cargo, lorries and individuals present within the port premises. Thorough examination of these items revealed no evidence of criminal conduct or irregularities.
This initiative was part of the European Alliance of Ports, a programme of the community executive inaugurated in Antwerp in early 2024. The Grand Duchy is collaborating closely in this coalition, which seeks to protect maritime terminals and distribution centres against risks posed by criminal gangs.
Logistics sites play a decisive role in continental trade. At the same time, they attract mafia organisations seeking to divert supply chains in order to bring prohibited substances and counterfeit products into the territory.
Given the constant evolution of strategies deployed by these networks, authorities indicate that it is crucial to increase surveillance, promote the sharing of intelligence, and strengthen coordination between the various intervention services.
