The Diekirch Bar Council has issued a statement to express its support for colleagues who have suffered assaults, following a general assembly held last Friday. This statement echoes a particularly shocking attack: on 12 June, a 53-year-old man stabbed a court-appointed administrator in Ettelbruck, according to Le Quotidien.
The professional targeted, though seriously injured, did not succumb to his wounds. He had been assigned a mission concerning the bankruptcy of the suspect, a task entrusted to him by the district court of Diekirch.
In its statement, the bar association firmly condemns all forms of violence against members of the profession. It notes that the incident of 12 June, striking though it may be, does not stand alone as an exception. An internal inquiry among practitioners shows that those who accept positions as auxiliary judicial officers — whether as bankruptcy liquidators or in adult protection measures — frequently suffer intimidation, insults, and occasionally physical assault in the exercise of these duties.
The Bar seeks to obtain an appropriate custodial sentence in response to these attacks. It recalls that the security of lawyers in the exercise of their profession, free from all threats or violence, remains fundamental to the proper conduct of justice, the effective guarantee of the right to defence, and the credibility of the judicial system in the eyes of the public.
This position follows a productive meeting between the Bar Council, the magistrate presiding over the district court of Diekirch, and the representative of the public prosecutor's office.
