A 27-year-old French national lost his life in Merl, in the Luxembourg capital, on Sunday 28 June, following a fatal assault with a blade weapon. His host, a Belgian citizen of the same age, is suspected of being the perpetrator of the crime.
The incident began early on the morning of that Sunday, when the victim encountered the man who would become the accused outside the latter's family home, located on Rue Saint-Gengoux. The Belgian man invited the young Frenchman to follow him to his home to share a meal. It was during or after this meal that the tragedy is believed to have occurred, "for reasons that remain to be established", according to the prosecutor's statement.
Investigators were unable to establish any prior relationship between the two individuals. They were complete strangers before this morning encounter. The prosecutor also clarified that no evidence suggests that the victim had committed any offence.
The criminal investigation unit of the judicial police has taken charge of the investigation. The suspect was arrested at the earliest opportunity and remanded in custody the following day on the decision of the investigating magistrate. Investigations, including a psychiatric evaluation, are underway to shed light on the motives and circumstances in which the murder was committed. The time required for these analyses will depend on the complexity of the case.
The prosecutor's office has indicated that it will not provide further information in order to preserve the secrecy of the investigation and protect the rights of the parties. The presumption of innocence applies fully to the suspect.
