A man has been sentenced to four years in prison for a knife attack at Hamilius that left the victim with a life-threatening wound.

A defendant identified as Vasile N. has been given a sentence of four years' imprisonment without suspension for a knife attack that took place at Hamilius, in Luxembourg City. The twelfth criminal chamber of the district court delivered its verdict this week, further ordering the convicted man to pay €10,000 in provisional damages to the victim, with the final sum to be determined by an expert.
The incident occurred on the evening of 26 January 2025, following a dispute between the two men. The exact reason for the disagreement could not be established, their accounts being contradictory.
According to the evidence presented during the trial, Vasile N. drew a blade and continued to insult the other man even after being restrained by several passers-by. The victim then rushed towards him, apparently intending to strike him with his fist. It was at this moment that the accused delivered a knife blow, causing a wound five to six centimetres deep.
Police officers who arrived at the scene shortly before 6 p.m. found the injured man lying on the ground, suffering from a serious wound to his right arm. An artery and the median nerve had been severed, causing heavy bleeding. The officers applied a bandage to stem the bleeding before the victim was rushed to a hospital in Kirchberg for a four-hour surgical procedure. He survived the attack.
The attacker fled the scene. A search operation was launched that evening, but he was not found immediately. Investigators initially issued a European arrest warrant for the wrong person before additional witness statements led them to Vasile N.
During his interrogation and again at a hearing in early July, the defendant admitted to the facts. However, he claimed not to have intended to kill the victim and to have acted in self-defence against a punch. The court rejected this argument and imposed a sentence of four years' imprisonment.
The judgment is not final and may be appealed within 40 days. Until it becomes final, the principle of the presumption of innocence continues to apply.
