The Diekirch Bar Association has officially confirmed that a 34-year-old lawyer was targeted in a murder attempt on 12 June whilst acting as curator in the bankruptcy of the suspect.

The Diekirch Bar Association has officially acknowledged that one of its members was the target of an attempted homicide in Ettelbruck on 12 June. The organisation issued a statement following its annual general assembly, according to Luxemburger Wort / Luxembourg Times.
The 34-year-old lawyer sustained serious injuries during the assault, which occurred near his home. His state of health was not, however, life-threatening. Several bystanders who witnessed the incident intervened to provide assistance to the victim and prevent the violence from continuing, according to the Diekirch public prosecutor's office.
Law enforcement arrested the suspected attacker, a 53-year-old man, in a nearby street shortly after the incident. The public prosecutor's office had then clarified that the injured man was acting as curator in connection with collective proceedings concerning the suspect.
In its statement, the Bar Association emphasised that this serious assault highlights the perils to which legal professionals are exposed when carrying out functions entrusted by the judiciary, notably as trustees or in schemes aimed at protecting vulnerable persons.
Whilst acknowledging that attacks of such gravity remain exceptional, the organisation stressed that they are in no way isolated cases. Members called upon to perform duties as ministerial officers — particularly as bankruptcy curators or in connection with protective measures for adults — frequently report threats, verbal assaults and sometimes physical violence in the exercise of their functions.
The bar association has already engaged in discussions with the Diekirch public prosecutor's office and the president of the district court regarding the security risks facing its members.
The Bar Association has further committed itself to supporting the victim and accompanying him in any judicial proceedings or other steps he may decide to undertake following the June assault.
It concluded by recalling that enabling lawyers to practise without fear of threats, intimidation or physical violence constitutes a fundamental condition for the proper functioning of the judicial system.
