The Grand Duchy has experienced three violent knife attacks over the course of a single week, one of which resulted in a death. The incidents have dominated the country's judicial news and raised questions among authorities about possible links between these episodes.
The first incident occurred on 23 June, in Limpertsberg, on the margins of the City Sounds festival. A person was stabbed in the neck with a knife and is in a critical condition. The attack reportedly arose from a dispute between two groups. Investigators have launched an appeal for witnesses. The suspect, a 51-year-old man, has been remanded in custody.
On the same day, a violent altercation broke out in Montée de Clausen, in Luxembourg City. Two men were arrested after a person was stabbed in the back with a knife, sustaining a deep wound.
On 28 June, the body of a man was discovered in a flat in the Merl neighbourhood. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the victim, a 27-year-old Belgian national, succumbed to a violent and fatal knife attack. The suspected attacker, a 27-year-old Frenchman, reportedly encountered the victim on the street before inviting him to his home to share a meal. It was after this meal that the attack allegedly took place, for reasons still unknown. The authorities specify that no link between the two men was known before that day. The investigation is ongoing.
When asked about a possible "contagion effect", police indicated they had no evidence to support such a trend. It is recalled that carrying a knife is strictly prohibited in Luxembourg.
