The 12th criminal chamber of Luxembourg's court has sentenced a teenager to 18 years' imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his stepfather, of which 8 years are suspended.
On 1 January 2025, the defendant, then aged 16, killed his sleeping stepfather by inflicting 48 knife wounds on him. The attack occurred after the teenager received messages from his 15-year-old half-brother falsely claiming that their father had seriously assaulted their mother. Prosecutors argued that these messages played a determining role in triggering the crime.
The younger brother is also suspected of having retrieved the knives used in the incident, although it has not been established whether he himself stabbed the victim. He will be tried separately before the youth court.
The public prosecutor had requested 15 years' imprisonment with 10 years suspended, taking into account the defendant's age and personal circumstances. Under Luxembourg law, a life sentence can in principle be imposed even against a minor aged 16. The court exceeded the prosecutor's recommendations, meaning the teenager will serve ten years in prison instead of the five years requested by prosecutors.
The case revealed years of alleged violence, alcoholism and conflict within the family home. Witnesses described the defendant as calm and responsible before the incident, but noted that he had gradually assumed a protective role within the household. The prosecutor acknowledged that the victim was "definitely a bad stepfather" who had mistreated his wife and humiliated the children.
The court imposed strict conditions for any eventual release. The convicted teenager must undergo psychological or psychiatric treatment for at least five years and regularly provide proof of compliance. He must also find employment after his release from prison, with a probation period of seven years.
The victim's three surviving siblings were awarded one euro in symbolic damages for their moral suffering. The convicted teenager must also pay approximately 6,500 euros in material damages, including funeral costs.
The judgment is not yet final. The defence has 40 days to lodge an appeal. The presumption of innocence remains until all appeals are exhausted.
