According to la1ere.francetvinfo.fr, a shooting erupted on Saturday 12 September around 8:30am in the Dillon North neighbourhood in Martinique. Bullet impacts remained visible on the façade of the Mamacila convenience store and the attached garage, which were targeted in the middle of the morning.
One person was directly targeted by the shooters but managed to flee before being hit. The perpetrators left the scene in a vehicle shortly after the gunfire. No casualties — neither killed nor injured — have been reported.
The area is not experiencing its first incident of this kind. A few months ago, a person had been shot dead at the same location. Police forces, present at the scene after the incident, indicated they are regularly called to this neighbourhood for similar crimes.
What concerns the authorities more this time is the boldness of the perpetrators, who did not hesitate to open fire in broad daylight, posing a direct risk to the population. Police point to the responsibility of drug trafficking networks which they describe as far-reaching.
Among residents, resignation rivals concern. "I heard about it this morning when I was at the market, no one reacted! It seems we are ending up getting used to it," says one resident. Others mention "regular gunfire in this part of Dillon", a sign of a situation that is becoming entrenched.
