Suspect released following Canal Alaric murder as investigation continues
A man in his thirties, held in provisional detention in connection with the homicide committed at Canal Alaric on Mardi Gras, 16 February, was released over the weekend. This resident of Fonds-Saint-Denis, born in Saint Lucia, turned himself in to the police station on Thursday evening, whilst authorities were searching for him.
During his questioning in police custody, the suspect reportedly claimed to have been a witness to the attack whilst denying any knowledge of those responsible for the gunshots. The shooting took place around 3 p.m. and claimed the life of one person, whilst two others were struck by projectiles. Officers found eight shell casings at the scene.
The two injured persons were admitted to hospital and subsequently questioned by investigators. They reportedly stated that they did not know why they had been targeted.
According to information gathered, all of the victims possess Saint Lucian nationality. Investigators are considering the hypothesis of drug trafficking or a conflict between rivals. The territorial service of the judicial police is continuing the investigation.
