The jury in the trial for the murder of Yorgen Fenech questioned why only two police officers were required to arrest Keith Schembri, the chief of staff of the former Prime Minister, in November 2019.
Assistant Police Commissioner Keith Arnaud told the court that the investigators were dealing with multiple developments that night, with new information coming in between 8:30pm and 10:45pm.
"Our choice was either to go to bed or to continue through the night. We decided to work during the night to see where the information would lead us," Arnaud said.
He explained that after interviewing Adrian Vella, he and Inspector Kurt Zahra continued with the investigation whilst the rest of the team went to rest.
"We decided to arrest Schembri and the reason only we went is because we remained on duty and the rest of the team went to rest," he told the jury.
The jury also questioned why Schembri's office at Castille was not searched at that time.
Arnaud admitted it could have been searched but confirmed that no search was carried out.
Their testimony forms part of the ongoing jury trial of Yorgen Fenech, who was acquitted of charges that he was the mastermind behind the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
