Two people are in police custody after officers allegedly witnessed a drug deal in the Marsamxett area of Valletta on Friday, Lovin Malta reports. The incident ended with the driver crashing his vehicle whilst attempting to flee.

Officers on routine patrol identified a Skoda Fabia suspected of involvement in drug trafficking. After following the car, police observed what appeared to be a deal taking place between several individuals. When they moved in, the driver — a 26-year-old man from Marsaskala — allegedly sped off, driving dangerously before crashing further along the road.

A 19-year-old woman from Mosta was also in the vehicle at the time of the arrest. A search of the car uncovered several packets of suspected synthetic cannabis, approximately €1,000 in cash and two mobile phones.

Both individuals remain in police custody as the investigation continues. The 26-year-old man is expected to be arraigned before Magistrate Nadine Sant Lia at around 9:30am today.
