Former Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar was spotted swimming at the hotel where jurors in the Yorgen Fenech murder trial are being accommodated, Lovin Malta reports. No contact between Cutajar and the jurors was established, and it was confirmed that the jurors were not at the hotel at the time he was using the pool.
The matter was brought before the court on Monday, when a photograph of Cutajar swimming at the hotel was raised as a concern. Judge Edwina Grima questioned how the former commissioner had known which hotel to visit. The court was subsequently assured that the security arrangements for the jurors remained intact, and the issue was closed.
Cutajar later addressed the controversy on Facebook with an unmistakably sarcastic tone. "Outside the hotel there was a sign: 'Jurors are here. Nobody can use the pool'. I'm sorry I didn't read it," he wrote, adding a smiley face to his post.
Cutajar has himself appeared as a witness in the ongoing Fenech trial and was subjected to extensive cross-examination by the defence at an earlier stage of the proceedings.
