George Degiorgio Testifies in Yorgen Fenech Trial: Accuses Keith Schembri and Chris Cardona
Convicted hitman George Degiorgio testified in the trial of Yorgen Fenech concerning the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, during which he made serious allegations against prominent political and administrative figures.
While on the stand in court in Valletta before judge Edwina Grima, Degiorgio alleged that Chris Cardona told him in 2015: "Do it quickly and kill her because she will harm the party." He also mentioned the name of Keith Schembri, who he said was involved in the case.
When prosecutor Dr Godwin Cini asked Degiorgio about the plan to kill Caruana Galizia in 2017, the hitman replied: "I don't know. I don't remember." He maintained that he had been silenced by various authorities, including the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Police, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Degiorgio also accused Cini of influencing the jury in the 2025 trial in which he and his brother Alfred were convicted of the assassination. "You influenced the jury in our trial," he told Cini. "Two murders in one jury... you should be ashamed."
Judge Grima warned Degiorgio that he was showing disrespect towards the court and fined him €500 for contemptuous behaviour. Degiorgio responded: "Make it €1,000."
The hitman explained that the €150,000 payment for the assassination was decided by him in 2015. He said that Vince Muscat, known as Il-Koħħu, had taken €10,000 from the deposit. When asked about the location where Melvin Theuma was passing the money, Degiorgio said he did not know, but mentioned the "potato sheds" as a place where Theuma sometimes met with them.
The prosecutor asked Degiorgio why he had not mentioned Keith Schembri in his previous testimony. He replied: "Because you don't know anything. You never questioned me. All you know how to do is fabricate lies and stories."
