The trial against Yorgen Fenech, who is accused of ordering the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has begun in Malta after nearly nine years of waiting for justice.
Fenech, a Maltese businessman, has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces. The trial is expected to last several weeks, with testimony from investigators, forensic experts and key witnesses who will testify before a jury.
Lawyer Jason Azzopardi, who forms part of the legal team representing the Caruana Galizia family, spoke outside the court and said this would be "a very long trial" that could last several weeks. He emphasised that the main objective is for "the truth to come out and justice to be done."
Azzopardi opened with words of respect towards Daphne Caruana Galizia, describing her as "a journalist, mother... wife who was killed in a brutal way so that her voice could be silenced."
According to Azzopardi's remarks, the prosecution's case claims that Fenech ordered the killing in order to prevent damaging information about him and his business activities from becoming public.
He also referred to the many years of work that had taken place before the trial began. "We have worked for many years. There are many people behind the scenes who made great sacrifices to get us here," said Azzopardi.
Caruana Galizia's murder took place in October 2017 when a bomb planted in her car's fuel tank exploded in Bidnija. The case became an international symbol of the need for better protection of journalists and the fight against impunity.
