Keith Arnaud Testifies in Yorgen Fenech Trial: Jury Hears Further Details of Investigation
On the fourth day of the trial of Yorgen Fenech for the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, lead investigator Keith Arnaud continued to testify before the jury.
Arnaud guided jury members through the police investigation, speaking about the statements made by informant Melvin Theuma and the evidence investigators gathered following his arrest.
One of the key clarifications made in court was that, despite former Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Keith Schembri being mentioned repeatedly in the secret recordings made by Theuma, Schembri is not implicated in the killing, Arnaud emphasised.
The jury also heard that Kenneth Camilleri told investigators he was asked by Schembri to calm Theuma as the informant became increasingly concerned after discovering that killer Vince Muscat wanted to speak to the police. According to Arnaud, Camilleri believed Theuma's concerns were political rather than related to the assassination of Caruana Galizia itself.
Arnaud told the court that Theuma began secretly recording conversations with Fenech after repeatedly passing money to brother Degiorgio and becoming increasingly concerned, as he believed Fenech was a powerful person with influential connections.
The investigator also testified that Theuma kept a photograph of himself with Keith Schembri and later told police he had taken it because he "wanted to blackmail him". The photograph was taken on the day Theuma received what was described in court as a ghost employment position with the government.
According to Arnaud, another theme that appeared repeatedly in the recordings was Theuma's concern that he had been "betrayed", a word that appeared repeatedly as his anxiety increased.
