Metsola: Fenech acquittal leaves Malta with unanswered questions on justice

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola devoted her State of the Nation address to Yorgen Fenech's acquittal, saying accountability must reach all who ordered and covered up the murder.

Metsola calls for full accountability after Fenech acquittal

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola used her entire State of the Nation address to respond to the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech, warning that the verdict has left Malta with "many more questions", Lovin Malta reports.

Speaking at the State of the Nation Conference, Metsola argued that Maltese and Gozitan citizens are entitled to institutions that serve the public rather than those who hold power.

"The citizen must be sure that the State is on their side, not on the side of power," she said.

Metsola paid tribute to investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, describing her pen as a shield for truth in the fight against corruption and the abuse of power.

She stressed that the verdict does not mark the end of the pursuit of justice. Accountability, she argued, must extend beyond those who physically carried out the assassination — encompassing whoever ordered, financed, assisted and covered up Caruana Galizia's murder.

"It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we remove what is wrong, and leave a State, leave a country for those coming after us, better than we found it," Metsola said.

She concluded her address by reaffirming her commitment to full justice, political integrity and institutional accountability.
