PN Calls for Attorney General to Step Down Following Fenech Verdict
The Nationalist Party has demanded the resignation of Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg after Yorgen Fenech was acquitted by a jury on Wednesday in the trial concerning the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Lovin Malta reports.
"The Attorney General needs to go today," PN MP Mark Anthony Sammut said at a press conference on Saturday.
Sammut accused Buttigieg of being both incompetent and corrupt, alleging she repeatedly makes mistakes in cases involving particular individuals. "I would be charitable to describe her as merely incompetent. She is corrupt and uses incompetence as a cover," he said.
He also criticised Buttigieg for reportedly being abroad during the trial and at the time the verdict was delivered, calling her absence "irresponsible".
Fenech, who had been accused of complicity in Caruana Galizia's murder, was found not guilty by the jury.
Sammut also directed criticism at Neville Gafa and government official Jason Micallef over social media posts published in the wake of the verdict. He highlighted posts by Gafa targeting members of the Caruana Galizia family, including one in which he referred to Daphne's sister as a "sewer rat" and another showing her children after the verdict with the caption: "Have they seen a ghost?"
Sammut argued that Prime Minister Robert Abela cannot credibly claim to respect Caruana Galizia whilst individuals associated with Labour continue to attack the murdered journalist and her family. "If he really has respect, these people need to go," he said.
PN MP Michael Piccinino, who appeared alongside Sammut at the press conference, renewed calls for the government to act on recommendations from the Daphne Caruana Galizia public inquiry. Piccinino specifically urged legislation targeting unexplained wealth and the obstruction of justice, accusing the government of stalling on reforms for too long.
