The jury in the trial of Yorgen Fenech heard that Melvin Theuma told police he kept a photograph of himself with Keith Schembri, former chief of the Prime Minister's office, because he "wanted to blackmail him".
This allegation emerged during the testimony of lead investigator Keith Arnaud, who continued giving evidence on the fourth day of the trial into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
According to Arnaud, Theuma explained that the photograph was taken on the day he was given what was referred to in court as a phantom government job.
The investigator told the jury that the photograph was among the material found in a box that Theuma handed over to investigators, and Theuma allegedly explained that he kept it deliberately because he wanted to use it to blackmail Schembri.
Arnaud also emphasised in his testimony that, although Schembri's name constantly appears in the recordings made by Theuma, Schembri is not implicated in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The trial continues before a jury in Valletta.
